Long Island Dog Parks | Have fun with your doggie!

Please--be a responsible dog owner. DO NOT bring dogs to dog parks that have aggression issues. A dog park is NOT the place to work on them!  Small dogs are especially vulnerable to attacks by agressive dogs.  Work out aggression issues with a professional trainer.

If you have a small dog--stick to parks that provide a separate area for smaller breed dogs.
Small dogs and large dogs don't always mix.  Personally, I no longer bring my small dogs to parks that do not have separate areas for small and large dogs. A friend of mine lost her beloved Yorkie this year after a large dog attacked it in a local dog park.  This particular park has no separate area for small dogs.   Unexpected attacks can happen -- read my post on Jilli Dog.  I myself lost a small Yorkie after a large stray came into our yard and attacked him.  It was devastating for my family.

In my opinion, mixing small breed dogs with large dogs is just not worth the risk. It is a tragedy waiting to happen.
Be wise and be safe--you can still and have fun!

This is a beautiful facility for dog lovers, with lots of shade provided in both the large and small dog areas. The Suffolk County Parks Department did a great job constructing this park and a lot of people have worked hard to get it open. Please don't bring dogs that have aggression issues as the dog park is definitely not the place to work on them! Many thanks to Legislator John Kennedy, the Suffolk County Parks Department, and all the members of LI-DOG who worked to get this park built. Enjoy the park with your dogs but please pick up after your them and please take good care of the park.

There is an active group at Blydenburgh called "
The Friends of Blydenburgh Dog Park". Their goal is to create a sense of community among the dog owners there, and also to promote harmony and safety for all who use the park. To find out more go to the Blydenburgh Dog Park website.

Mud Creek County Dog Park
450 Roe Ave, Patchogue
Google Maps for location

Called
Mud Creek County Park, for the creek that runs along the eastern border of the site, the off-leash area is the first new dog park created under the Five New Dog Parks initiative, which LI-DOG championed and was signed into law in May 2007. The beach is also the first new Natural Borders Dog Park created in Suffolk County.

The new off-leash beach has no amenities—no trash receptacles, no poop bag stations, and no dog water fountains. The beach is considered “carry-in, carry-out” where people will have to pick up after their dogs and take away the waste themselves. It's very important that dog owners take good care of this park and keep it clean.
CAUTION:  Watch out for broken glass and poison ivy.  Temporarily closes March 1st through June 30th annually to protect potential nesting birds.  Join the Mud Creek County Dog Park on Facebook

The entrance to this 1.75 acre park is on Sweet Hollow Road just north of the intersection of Old Country Road and Sweet Hollow Road. There is a water fountain, and several benches and waste bag dispensers. When you visit a dog park make sure to watch and pick up after your dog. Many people have put hours of dedication and hard work into getting these dog parks built, and it's only fair that those who use them act as responsible dog owners when they visit with their dogs.

When you pull in you will see the dog park on your right. From Old Country Road and Route 110
take Old Country Road West. In less than 1/4 mile you will turn north onto Sweet Hollow Road. Go about 1/2 mile and you will come to the entrance to the park on your right side. Turn in and you will see the dog park on the right. If you pass the stables you have gone too far.

Dog Parks Do's and Don'ts
by Ellen Rassiger

Here are some simple recommendations to make everyone’s visit to the dog park safe and enjoyable!

DO keep a regular collar WITH ID TAGS on your dog at all times, even at the park.

DO carry a leash with you at all times.

DO watch your dog at all times for defecation, inappropriate bullying/overly rough play, and digging.

DO bring poop bags, EVERY time!

DO pick up poop if you see it, even if it’s not from your dog.

DO bring fresh water for your dog if there is none available (and be willing to share).

DO keep a canine first aid kit in your car, as well as your vet’s phone number and the number of the closest emergency clinic, in case any dog suffers an injury while playing.

DO educate your fellow dog owners, politely and discreetly, if you see that their dog is wearing an inappropriate collar, or if they haven’t picked up after their dog.

DO make sure your dog is fully vaccinated and licensed before bringing her to the park.

DO keep your dog on leash until you reach the off-leash area.

DO spay or neuter your dog. Spayed/neutered dogs make better play companions!

DON'T bring your dog to an unfenced dog park if he/she must be kept on a leash for fear of running away.

DON'T let your dog run in the dog park while wearing a choke chain OR prong collar. It is easy for other dogs’ paws or mouths to get caught in these collars during play, and possible for your dog to get injured by a tightening collar.

DON'T bring small children to a dog park. They can easily be knocked down or injured by running dogs. Children of ANY age must be closely supervised at all times.

DON'T throw sticks for dogs to play with. If the stick lodges in the ground as the dog is going to "catch" it, it can cause serious injury. Balls or Frisbees make much safer toys!

DON'T bring a dog to the dog park that has aggression issues toward other animals OR people. This is NOT the place to work on it!

DON'T bring drinks in glass containers – they could easily be knocked down or out of your hand by a playing dog and break.

DON'T leave your dog unattended at the dog park – EVER!

DON'T bring a dog to the dog park that barks persistently.

DON'T bring pups younger than 4 months to the dog park.

DON'T bring a female dog that is in season ("in heat").

DON'T bring bones or food to the dog park, as this may trigger dogfights.

DON'T allow your dog to stand and bark at the double-gate area when a new dog is coming in – it is polite to call your dog away so the new dog can enter with ease.

Proposed Dog Parks:

Dog Park Proposed at Gardiners Park

A proposal to build a dog park in Gardiners Park in Bay Shore has been made by a dog owner who lives in East Islip and is a building contractor. The dog owner has been working on a proposal with Leg. Tom Cilmi (R-Islip) and has offered to build the dog park at no cost to the County. The Suffolk Parks Dept. has specified that the dog park will need to be built west of the playground, in an area the Dept. has long targeted for the development of a dog park. The Dept. has asked the dog owner and building contractor to submit plans to the Dept. as soon as possible.

A Dog Park Commitment from Oyster Bay!

LI-DOG has been petitioning the Town of Oyster Bay since February 2008 for a much needed dog park. At the October 18, 2011, Town Board meeting, we finally got confirmation from Supervisor John Venditto that a site in Massapequa has been designated for this purpose. The dog park will be created within a larger park on the 5.5-acre property.

  1. the worst thing i have seen with dog parks is that people don't clean up the mess of their dogs and expect the care taker to clean it up which makes it difficult for other dog owners and then everybody starts to blame each other. I have been reading a lot of stuff about people taking their dogs to dog park misbehavior is one thing but the mess created by dogs is something to be avoided. what do you say about it? would love to hear your opinion on it.
