I became The Doggie Nanny over 10 years ago after having difficulty finding a safe place to board my own little dogs. My family and I have a pet friendly, cage free home where we provide loving care-- exclusively for small breed dogs--15 pounds and under.

Thanksgiving Blessings

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's the season of giving thanks. We have so much to be thankful for.

It is difficult to comprehend just how blessed we are in this country. Many of you know that we adopted a few years ago from Ukraine. Visiting the former Soviet Union was an eye opening experience. It dramatically demonstrated to me just how blessed I have been throughout my life; we have never been without food, heat, electricity, clothes or anything that we needed. We have always lived in abundance.

I want to take this moment to thank all our Doggie Nanny families who have boarded their little precious dogs with us over the years. Thank you for trusting us with your beloved pets. Thank you for letting us enjoy them while you were away. Thank you for your friendships!

We pray for God's blessing on you and your families this holiday season!

Small breed dogs need lots of human companionship and interaction. As a pet parent of two little Yorkies, I know just how demanding a 4 pound ball of fur can be! Don't let size fool you-- small breed dogs have big personalities and big demands for your time and attention. It is only natural that owners of small breed dogs have very close connections with their petite pets. The dogs aren't the only ones that experience separation anxiety!

When to use a pet sitter and separation anxiety in pets

No matter how loving or wonderful a boarding facility may be-- private or commercial-- some dogs just need to stay in their own home environment. Elderly, sick dogs and dogs with anxiety issues may do better at home with a pet sitter visiting them several times in a day than in a new, foreign setting.  Finding themselves suddenly in an unfamiliar home or facility can be overwhelming for the pet with anxiety.

Most little dogs are thrilled to have the companionship of other little doggies and the love and attention of The Doggie Nanny! However, we have found for a small number of dogs, a change of environment can bring out anxiety, aggression and  destructive or nervous behaviors that overwhelm the dog and the care provider.

Though it is the exception, in 6 years of providing home boarding for small breed dogs, we have had three dogs here that would have been better off remaining home. My first experience with severe separation anxiety was with a male dog that whimpered and cried for two and a half days...all day and through the night. He also pee'd incessantly all over the house. The second dog just acted crazy, pooped everywhere and walked it all over our home as well. I went through a lot of bleach that weekend!  The third was simply in a state of panic for most of her visit with us and constantly tried to escape. Throughout their visit, these three dogs suffered and exhausted me with all the extra cleaning I had to do! They shook, cried, peed and pooped. I was unable to console them.

Occasionally when someone brings their dog to a another home for boarding for the first time, they are upset.  When I say "they", I mean both the owner AND the dog are upset.  The doggie mom or dad is insecure about leaving their precious little pet with a stranger or family member that is new to the pet.  The dog is frightened when they realize they will be separated from their mom or dad-- the people who are the focus of their existence.  Quite understandable.  Sometimes the pet parent exacerbates the situation with a prolonged goodbye and the dog's anxiety becomes heightened.  Goodbyes should be short and sweet.

I want to reassure pet parents out there.  How can you feel secure in your choice of boarding service?  First, do your due diligence.  You can get boarding recommendations from other pet owners, from your Groomer, Vet or even the internet.  

Research the person or business with whom you are leaving your little pet. Spend the time to visit their home or facility.  The last thing you want to do is to leave your precious pet with a boarding service without visiting beforehand, discover you made a mistake, but due to time and circumstances realize you have no other options.

Doggie Nanny News:
We recently joined Yorkie 911 Rescue as a foster family and we helped in the adoption of 3 dogs so far and we are fostering one little rescue at the moment. His name is Rascal --a shy little Chihuahua, Pomeranian mix. He came from a local home that was found to have 115 dogs living in squalid conditions. The news reports said that the dogs were fighting over food and water-- but I wonder if the reports were exaggerated. From what I understand, none of the dogs had to be put down. I was told that the vet who did the initial evaluations of all the dogs was surprised-- usually they loose about 30% if dogs taken in a seizure. I am still working with Rascal. He is not at all aggressive, just very shy. He is coming around slowly. Last night he slept close to me for the first time. Hopefully Rascal will find his new forever home soon.

Belly Bands
Over the past 5 years, I have met many naughty little doggies and their frustrated doggie parents.  I found a solution for leg lifters that I have shared with the owners of these little pee pee boys.  I recommend using Pampers on the naughty little boys wrapping them around their body. They worked fairly well as long as your little guy doesn't decide to tear apart the diaper. A shredded disposal diaper can create an enormous amount of dust in your home. Even though disposable diapers usually do the trick with little leg lifters--I thought there had to be a better solution.

Then I discovered the belly band concept. A belly band holds a feminine napkin or Poise type pad in place on a male dog's body. I started sewing my own and through trial and error-- and real life application-- came up with a design that really works. I am now in the process of investigating the cost of having them manufactured. Many of my Doggie Nanny clients have seen my belly bands and purchased them for themselves or a friend with a naughty dog. They really work and save your rugs and furniture!!!

For little girls with a peepee problem, I purchased Puppy Panties. Though they work, I think they could be designed better. I will be working on designing a better Puppy Panty next!

Cleaning
Do you have a problem with pet smells in your home or yard? I have discovered a great solution for removing urine smell from the yard, as well as in your home. While bleach works great for removing urine smells from floors, you wouldn't want to use it outside where it could destroy grass or plants. There is a wonderful product called "Simple Green" (sold at Home Depot, Kmart, Staples, etc.) that will solve your pet odor problems inside and out!
For outdoors, I purchased a sprayer that can attach to the hose and filled it with a diluted solution of about 50/50 of Simple Green. I spray our deck, outdoor rugs, and anything the dogs might have lifted their leg on and the odors are gone!

For indoors, I keep a spray bottle filled with a 50/50 diluted solution for cleaning the floors after an accident. It is also a great product for removing soap scum in the bathroom and grease in the kitchen.
